Just to remind you, our main goal was to create a functional office space without losing the essence of this beautifully designed mid-century modern home. One of the most important factors of the interior coincided with the exterior: showcase the magnificent beams that run throughout the entire house. Another factor was the wood paneling. We really wanted to salvage as much as possible and use it throughout the entire office space. So, as you saw in last week's blog, we started with a white fireplace with black grout, wood paneling, and A/C wall units from 1958...
I don't even know where to start! How about from the top, down? As you can see, the ceiling had lots of damage, so Sean had 2 x 6 shiplap installed running perpendicular to the beams. To refresh you of last week's blog, the walls were all cinderblock. Sean furred the walls out and sprayed insulation throughout, since there wasn't any to start with. Red River Remodelers then sheet-rocked over it to give the space a clean white background with Benjamin Moore's White Dove OC-17.
Since we removed all the wall units (7), we had to install an HVAC system to accommodate our space. To keep with the essence of the house, we increased the height of the 50's style windows that ran throughout the living area, and used the exterior bricks we removed to fill-in where the A/C units lived. I absolutely LOVE how this picture frame window turned out! It brings in so much natural light!!
The fireplace created a nice focal point by contrasting the white walls in Valspar Graphite. The original hearth was red brick, which we replaced with Marmo Grigio Italia marble to finish off the sleek, modern twist to the fireplace. The space is finished off with a local architectural print from Paul King.
Angie really wanted to throw tribute to the mid-century modern era with a sputnik light, but ended up with this awesome gold urchin light from Stimulight which still has the essence of a sputnik light with a little spunk :)
Now to the wood paneling! With a little love, tender care, and Benjamin Moore White Dove, these panels transitioned into beautiful clean lines, adding subdued texture to our white walls. The light fixtures in the entry are from the original CC Hardman Co in downtown Shreveport. They are just a small way to pay homage to our locals and the mid-century modern era.
The key to remodeling such an amazing space is to bring in new pieces without losing the essence of the original space. There's no finer way to bring in a modern feel than with a funky storage cabinet! Here, we use two of CB2's Stella Cabinets to hide away all our paint samples!
Side note: as you know the roof/ceiling was in horrible shape and the A/C was built in, so Red River Remodelers ended up having to run the duct system throughout the space in a very visually appealing way (which they nailed, if I do say so myself!)
Next week, look out for our kitchenette, bathroom, and Sean & Angie's offices! The question is... Which of those came from this space?
